Car Hire in spain
« on: March 12, 2008, 12:00:39 pm »

Dear Sheep....

Andrew and Karen are doing their own thing leaves us with 14 people to cart about to crags-
thats 3 cars  very tightly packed or 4 cars more comfy. Depedning on Dave E we may get 3 at alicante
and 1 with him, meaning 13 for trip from airport to house - a squeeze but def. doable

My pref is 4 small cars (i usually go for a Clio/Ka size and get upgraded as they run out)

So (ignoring complications with Dave E ) we need to book some cars and people need to volunteer to drive.
We usually aim to have 2 drivers per car to provide max flexibility. I havent checked any sites yet but believ oher people have

Need to know who is able/willing to drive. Of course if you drive you get to influence/go where you want, if you are a passanger you
are more reliant on other people to go where you want (You have all  downloaded and read the topos to see where you'd like to go havent you ????)

so any names ? any good sites suggestions

We've already done research into the best deals so no need to spend any time doing it again, unless someone's at a loose end!

I'll look out the details and post here later.

Dear Dolly

The cheapest deals I've found are from http://doyouspain.com
About £80 for 8 days depending on size of car etc.

Andrew & Karen have already booked a car, makes sense as they're the only non-climbers.

David's going to bring one from Granada.  He's leaving on the Saturday, but so are Debbie and Sally so that's no problem.

We therefore have another 11 people to worry about.

First decision I guess is do we want another 3 cars, or another 4?

P.S. I'll drive.

P.P.S We could do with some* road maps of the area, to include Murcia city and the area just to the east, the Sierra Espuna, and down to the coast at Cartagena where there's another crag
(* where some = a number to be decided)

I'll volunteer to drive - I'm usually one of the first to be cold and tired so will leave crag with first lot.

i think we need 3 cars from Alicante making 4 (plus a+k makes 5 in total)

but i make that 13 people in 3 cars not 11 from airport to house (about 90 mins .. 2hours ) ?
(16 minus a,k,de ?)

Thats 4 per car plus 1 car of 5 but the i'd rather save the money for
a bit of temporary discomfort - i know my views arent always shared
and some peeps would rather spend more cash for luxury

Don't forget Tracy and Pete E are leaving a few hours earlier than the rest of us on the way back.

is it a significant amount earlier - if its just an hour or so some (2) peeps would go with them
if its 6 hours then there is an issue.

of course you'll need a car (with headlight pointing up hill) to squeeze the last 5 mins of sunshine out of the day  ;D
(BTW what time sunset down there - may be irrelvant as we wont be able to use that extra time)

Fair enough if there are volunteers to leave slightly earlier - I won't be one of them though!
Of course it'll be snowing so less of an issue.

I guess its about time i had a go at driving on the wrong side - so take that as a reluctant volunteer.  I guess I can't be much worse than Pete E  ;D

Just want to comment that im a shite* driver at the best of times, so i'd be a definite hazard to drivers and pedestrians alike if i attempted to drive in Spain. Thankyou to anyone that voulunteers to drive.
*p.s. are mild swear words allowed on the forum?

You weren't there were you when he turned right onto a busy main road on the wrong side of the road.  Twice in the same trip.

Anyway I'm only trying to provoke him into posting  ;D

Hey I will drive...

I am currently getting my practise in scaring the Americans......so I should be on fine form by the time we get to Spain

Also I have picked up a new toy after playing with my friends toy.......  OK it is a US and Europe wide GPS unit.  It covers the area arpund Alicante and Murcia pretty good.

They have this strange stick in Spanish hire cars, I think it's called a 'gear lever'

Will be interesting to see what it has to say about the private roads guarded by locked gates - there are quite a few around by the looks of things.
