GEAR: maillion/quicklinks/leaver biners/...
« on: March 12, 2008, 07:44:03 pm »

On the kit list we have aded a leaver biner/maillion in case you need to lower off  (better to abseil) a bolt and
dont want to leave a nice new shiny expensive krab. This may happen if the route is too hard for you or its getting dark or ....

I've just bought a couple of 6mm 'Quicklinks' from FastPack (Lilac avenue, off hull road close to tang hall lane) for 1.42 a pair.
http://streetmap.co.uk/streetmap.dll?G2M?X=462513&Y=451497&A=Y&Z=1

Obvisoulsy cheaper than a new krab link and better as they screwup tight. These are untested/rated so you may not be happy using
them but i reckon 6mm of steel will hold my puny weight (tested ones rate at 500+ Kg), you can get fatter 8mm version as well - your call.

You can buy similar from B+Q and Barnitts at twice the price.  If you want rated ones try climbing or caving shops eg

Is it safe to wear long shorts? i.e. are there biting insects, mosquitos and scorpions? Or would ones legs get generally shredded with the craggy rocks?  ::) and why did Cefyn put gloves on the list please?

Shorts - yes, it's safe.  Never had problems with insects, and never seen a scorpion in Spain.  I've seen a couple of snakes though :o  And yes you risk shredding your legs, I believe the best way of avoiding this is to adopt good climbing technique, but I've never got round to trying this.

Gloves are useful if it's cold!  It should be warm/hot, but there's no guarantee (a few years ago it didn't get above 10C all week on our trip), also it can be cold early and late in the day.
And some people like to wear them for abseiling.

Simon's right it can get cold. Snow is not an exaggeration! A long sleeved T shirt is also a good idea for climbing in - lightweight. If you're prone to falling you don't want to shred your arms - very painful. I did that a couple of years ago - so now I bring a very lightweight long sleeved T to put on while I climb and remove it -leaving normal T on for those of you with dirty minds  ;) -to sunbathe

Thankyou for the info! looks like im going to get shredded legs as I havn't masterred the technique thing either  :o I do have a few more questions - is this the correct section?
1)Ive got a problem with pongy rock shoes -im concerned that Jet2 might confiscate them for being a health hazard. Does anyone know of any way of getting rid of the smell - i read somewhere that you can put them in a freezer - has anyone tried this?
p.s its not a hygiene problem as I get showered every day  :P

2)Do we need to be able to speak any Spanish? I just know Grassyass, porfavor and merci beaucoup. What is the word for 'help' ?

3)Are there any facilities at any of the crags - ie toilets and ice cream stalls?

4) How far are we from the hotel restaurant and cafe-bar - and can we get a menu before we go?

Im sure i'll think of some more soon.
Thankyou!

They won't confiscate them, they'd have to touch them to do that  ;)
Tried the freezer method, doesn't work.  Washing them in warm soapy water does, but be careful or you can damage them.  Disinfectant sprays/powders can also help.
But the best method is prevention - wear a thin pair of socks inside your shoes.

2)Do we need to be able to speak any Spanish? I just know Grassyass, porfavor and merci beaucoup. What is the word for 'help' ?

No you don't, that's what David's for :)
"Una gran cerveza por favor" is quite useful though.
The Spanish for 'help' is "HEEEEEEEELP!"

3)Are there any facilities at any of the crags - ie toilets and ice cream stalls?

Unlikely at the crags, possible nearby, they vary a lot though.  Some are 5 minutes from the road/nearest village, others are an hour or more.  We usually take bread and stuff for lunches, and use the nearest shrubbery when nature calls.

4) How far are we from the hotel restaurant and cafe-bar - and can we get a menu before we go?

If you mean where we're staying, then I think there's one in the hotel round the corner.  No idea on menus/prices/etc.  We usually end up eating out 2 or 3 times and cooking in the rest.

is this the right place - no but who cares ! Its easy to start a new thread/topic

0) knees will suffer - ask Julie ! I wear shorts most of the time.

1) shoes - Cef says wear socks!  can wash em in washing machine.  freezer dont work in my expereince.
spray em with some anti-pong I am sure jet 2 have smelt worse !

2) Spanish - basics helps a lot, this place is more remote than most so will be less english.

3) who knows ... maybe maybe not, check the topos or the guidebooks for toilet info....

4) next door to the restaraunt - who knows about a menu - look when we get there !
maybe some local places in village as well.

Just got Dave Dickinson's email - guess he's not joined the forum  :( anyway he made a point about kit list describing what's needed between pairs for the trip. When are we going to sort out who's bringing what kit wise for us to share - so we don't all show up with the same stuff (ie 10 big bertha hexes  ;D)...

Just wondered if it would be worth meeting up to sort out some of these issues, ie. gear, cars, books etc face to face.  Debbie and I will be at the climbing wall, Oaklands on Thursday night.  We usually arrive at 7pm.  We could get a cuppa and sort stuff out if this suits anyone????? Just follow the smell of cheesy climbing shoes :)

I usually get my travel insurance through the post office, but guess what? They don't insure for climbing! It's official, it's dangerous!  Gulp!  :o  Any suggestions/ideas - what do others do?

im sure (if its anything like most years) we will swap around climbing partners , belay each other borrow gear, share top ropes and other things. To work out how much gear maybe we need 'notional' parings - this is NOT a suggestion for who will climb with whom rather for gear purposes.

eg
Simon + Carmen
Sal + Deb
Rob + Jules
Pete B + Tracy
Cef + Dave D
Dave E + Pete E
Alan + Peri

between the pairs will need rope and krabs.  Trad gear i think will need less than 1 set per pair as most of our time wil be bolt clipping.  Might benefit for a few wires per group.

I' ll be taking 2 ropes (my new flashy  super skinny sewing thread 70m and a 60m) and enough QDs for me +J, and a light trad rack (set of wires, 3 cams, couple of extra slings) which i'd happily lend if i am not using it. (J could if requred take a 50m rope and a few QDs but doubt its required)

Cef has said he'll take a pair of 60m 1/2 ropes for tradding and loads of QDs (lets hope he doesnt bring all his trad kit as there is a 20kg weight limit :-)

Dave E can bring everything he owns as he doesnt have to fly so ropes and gear if he has it

S+C have lots of experience so will S wil bring what needed and C bring 3 'just in case' spares (useful when you forget or drop your belay device down a 7 pitch ice route !)

If anyone needs to borow stuff, lets hear it now :-)

1) yes but many of us wont be here on thurs as well be in scotland and tracy, pete b wont make it, hence the use of the forum.  If we get the training session off the ground then we can iron out any
final issues then.

2) insurance.    see other thread ...

<<<Oi, I was first!>>>

Well, they are sort of Krab size ;D I don't have a micrometer handy, but they are good size snap gates, not mini size and not nicked from a dockyard crane.  They're not screwgates either Peri, you worry too much, there'll be another runner below you to catch  you in the unlikely event anything fails. :-X, the bolts are quite close together in Spain - as close as 4 or 5 metres sometimes! :'(. You don't I d be flogging Screwies for a Spanish beer do you?
(I'm new to these bulletin boards, cant make the quote thing work properly).

Since there's been no further mention of ropes, quickdraws, etc since Rob's post last week, can we assume that everybody has got themselves sorted as per his suggestion?

Or are we going to get to Spain only to find that we only have 2 ropes and a sling between 10 people?
