Walks / Canyons / History / Rest Day activities ...
« on: March 26, 2008, 08:09:12 pm »

its becoming a tradition that when the weather is great and we have done a few days cragging
we have a rest day and scare the be-jessus out of ourselves on a 'easy' walk

just thought i'd raise this one ... if anyone has any info (websites, guidebooks dave E ?) on walks , hills,
canyons (barrancos) ridges or other stuff.  We are on the edge of  national park so ought to be ok !

Tracy mentioned somethng about checking out the cultural / historical side of things for us heathens,
or head for the cafes in town!

here's what i've found from google so far ..

There is a book of walks which Andrew has ordered, to be delivered chez David.  With any luck it may even arrive before the trip.  I also found a shed load of web sites which I sent to Andrew, unfortunately none of them was of any use.  And the 'forthcoming' English guidebook isn't published yet (and probably never will be, as their web site was last updated in 2006).

We've also got a map or two of the national park on order, if they're of the usual Spanish quality then they'll also be of limited usefulness.

In short, there's probably something out there, but we'll probably only find it by chance  :)

I will bring some literature related to the cultural side of things for those who actually want to rest on their rest day! These side trips usually mean lunch or drinks in a sunny square soaking up some culture.  ;D

There are a few via ferratas around if anyone's interested (I know Andrew is cos he keeps asking me about them!).  There are some details here
http://www.geocities.com/costablancaclimbing/viaferrata.html
The Ponoch one is probably too far but the other two are within travelling distance, maybe 90 minutes drive at a guess.

You really need proper VF kit - which basically some dynamic braking devices - some people just use slings, but these are pretty useless.  I think Andrew/Karen are borrowing some.  Carmen and I have some which we could try to bring along if there's space, and I think Peter does too.

Is anyone else interested?

Have a look at the link a few posts up, there are some photos there which should tell you.  But basically, it's climbing up a bit of rock either using fixed bits of metal - cables, ladders, etc.
