Car Hire
« on: March 03, 2009, 02:16:58 pm »

How many cars will we need?

Andrew and Karen will need one as they're not climbing.

There are another 12 or 13 of us, depending on whether Cef's coming or not.

So another 3 cars should be enough, maybe make sure they're not all Ka-sized  :)

Cheapest I've found is about £114 (for a KA or similar), £130 for Fiat Punto, £160 Ford Focus.

Thoughts?

Does that mean we need another car - if you & Julie take on, and Andrew/Karen have one, that's 11 of us in 2 cars?

not sure what that means - how many did we have last year as there were the same number of us. Andrew & Karen weren't in the equation last year and aren't really in it this year either.

You don't expect me to remember last year do you!

There are 13 of us, how many cars do we need? If we need the flexibility (and why not) for a couple of people to do their own thing on one day, then that leaves 11 people, so 3 cars? Making a total of 4 plus Andrew/Karen.
Unless Cef doesn't come in which case we could get away with one less?

As an archivist I would say we could look at last year's forum to find out about last year  ;) but I think that sounds good - 4 cars plus A&K - it'll make things easier for airport transfers as well with luggage - oh and food shopping.

...or a couple of 7 seaters - will reduce options but might be cheaper?

although we're all 'cheap' yorkshiremen/women I think it would be better to have options as we're 13 climbers - if we all end up at a small crag together it'd be like a climbing wall - queueing at routes. We had the same issue last year in Spain.

Did we? I don't remember that.  Maybe on the first day slightly when everyone was converging on the grade 4s :)

Will investigate costs and report back.

Peter/Andrew - any requirement this year for a car/van that'll take bikes?

Andrew and I would like a car that can take bikes, something like a Ford Focus will be big enough for two bikes. It would be easiest if Andrew or I hires that car.

Vans like Fiat Doblos are very expensive on Holiday Autos.

Cheapest prices (at least for small cars) are at Auto Europe
Large vehicles seem to be around 2 to 3 times the price of small ones, so cheaper to go for multiple small.

I'm with Tracy on this. I'd rather pay a bit more for the flexibility. Besides the early birds will then have to hang around while we get out of bed...or maybe they won't!

rob postng as rob

im all for saving dosh  and dont mind a bit of a squeeze on the way there but
i think well need more flexibilty than a having a pair of vans (extreme) would entail

not sure what the best combination is (i am a bit pissed so cant be expected to work
anything out :-)

just in favour of having two or more cars able to go to diverse places...also ties in with waking
habits but alos diverse goals (eg multi-pitching vs beaching vs biking etc)

re the bikers car - we need to make sure we don't end up with the same as last year when the named drivers worked out so that on the biking day there was a shortage of cars! Though we all (except DME) arrive on the same flight this year which should make it easier with a little planning.

Would it work if A&K's car were the biking car?

Does it make a difference if Cef isn't coming?
Leaving A&K aside:
13 people = 4 cars
12 people = 4 cars? or 3 cars?

A Focus and 3/4 KAs should be enough, or maybe 2 focus and 2/3 KAs????

A Ka is very small it would be difficult to get 4 people and climbing kit into a Ka never mind other luggage.

I would go for 3 Focus and 1 Ka.

Current prices (from a different company, auto-europe has gone up, a Ka is now £126)

Lancia Ypsilon (whatever that is) or similar = £120

Vauxhall Astra or similar = £133 - I don't know much about cars but this sounds quite large/cheap?

a KA is ok once your there (or clio is ok for 4 inc sports climbing kit ie small rucsac or rope bag each)
tight squeeze on the way from airport to place. But if enough space to shift gear about we'll make it ok.

I am happy to drive or not drive

Not sure if Cef has made up his mind and if anyone would substitute for him at last minute ????

Is a focus/astra big eough for 2 bikes and 2 people and hangers on - ie would K want to go on that trip
or would 3 people want to go biking - not sure plety of good trails to ride/drive though
