Where and When are we going ?

Time to start arguing about the sun rock trip ? If its very popular we'll need to be quick to find
suitable accommodation ...

  • Turkey
  • Sicily
  • Itlay
  • Spain Mainland
  • Majorca
  • ... ?

When ?
Easter is  April 2nd (good fri)  .. Apr 5th (mon) and we have a meet scheduled for that time ?
I can go March 19..April 25 (unfortuenately not all of it!)
Will be in Scotland 9/10/11 April

My vote is for anywhere except Turkey... we scary terrorist Canadians require a visa for Turkey.  I like the idea of somewhere like Sicily or the warmer drier bit of Spain (like the trip we did to Alicante).

I'v seen the South Park movie and I know what you evil canadians are like. I'm easy on venue, with a preference for somewhere likely to be dry.

Hows about the Picos in NW Spain? Not sure how much single pitch stuff there is there. No warm sea to swim in though.

It's never warm enough to swim anyway....though perhaps this would be the year all the snow they are getting now means they couldn't possibly get it in the spring could it?? :D

Have we been to Motril? Warm climate... or how bout somewhere near Barcelona?? or we could branch out of the 's' countries and try Greece or the south of France.

The Picos are very definitely winter climbing until about May - I've go9t a very tempting book that I got cheap in a sale - all looks very Scottish (ie if you book a winter climbing holiday there then it'll all melt the day before you arrive). Anyway, I digress. Here are some random thoughts.

Dates - March rather than April for me. The same for Carmen as her holiday year end is March.
Or would it be too radical to suggest October?!? Seas would be warm :)

Venue - I like the sound of Turkey (how much hassle is getting a visa Tracy?) but can't think of anywhere I wouldn't go. I've got a Montserrat guidebook and it looks great, a work colleague went for 4 days once and said he thought it might be a bit same-y for a week but there's probably other stuff nearby. We've not done the main Costa Blanca area for a few years, I think most people have yet to go there?

Dry weather - south of Spain is possibly safest but when we got snowed on at Morata, and showered on in Granada, they had major downpours and flooding in Alicante!

Well it looks like we ALL need a visa for Turkey but we can get them at port of entry (Guess you lot are as bad as us Canadians  ;). See http://www.worldtravelguide.net/country/284/passport_visa/Europe/Turkey.html

I like the Costa Blanca, I've not been, but I'd be keen on Turkey as well... I've taken up bellydancing and would love the opportunity to look at some of the souks on our supposed day off.


I don't mind postponing til Sept/Oct if you were serious about that Simon. The weather is much more stable that time of year and the sea is warm enough to swim in too. Also houses tend to be quite cheap, the one we hired in Corsica was very cheap.

i would also be happy with an autumn sun-rock. not too late though, it can piss it down in the med in autumn! (I once spent a happy week being rained on and bitten to death by mozzies in croatia).
I havnt been to the main climbing bit of the costa blanca yet either, and would be very curious to try it.

I tend to travel south (ie the med) for my birthday every year (mid-sept) and there are never really any tourists, all the kids are at school and the weather is sublime. It's never rained on my birthday yet!

Someone really needs to take a lead on this or it's not going to happen. And no I'm not offering, I don't have time this year.

To get you going - favourite dates seem to be either 20-27 March, or sometime in the autumn.
Favourite locations, Turkey, Costa Blanca, or anywhere else warm and dry.

Once a date/location are fixed, the main things to do are finding accommodation and researching flights. And probably investing in a few cattle prods to get people to commit to something :)

I don't mind researching accommodation, but seeing as I live outside York doing the flights would mean you all have to fly from Luton or Stanstead. My climbing location knowledge is limited as well...

was chatting to young mr walby last night who was browsing guyidebooks at The Depot and did a  good job of convincing me mallorca could be a very fine destination indeed - some  very impressive looking long mountain routes at amenable grades (and yes, I have read the rumours about mallorcan grades)
