CARS
« on: February 10, 2010, 04:35:38 pm »

we need some;

12 people, with probably different goals so whilst a minimum of 3 cars would suffice
for transport it doesn't leave much space for flexibility.  we could just divvy it up
and say your 4 organise your own car or we could see how many extras we need.

Most fo the time the trips will be short and with little kit, the exception being the airport run.

If anyone want a car on their own to explore etc worth saying now...

I usually use www.Argusrentals.com  but we ought to start looking for deals

key dates and times:
arrive :  20 March  Palermo Airport (PMO)    20:45 - realistically car pick up at 21:15 ?
depart : 27 March  Palermo Airport (PMO)    21:10 - realistically car drop off up at 19:30 ?

Paula and myself will be driving to stanstead in our car so we will have space for two, if any one is interested in a lift there and back IE from and to Askham Bryan.
We will be hiring a car over there so we need to know who is in with us.
Would like to get it organised by the end of next week.

We are off skiing on 20th to 27th so will not be about. I am then working in London and Sancton so we could go to Stanstead from our house down south.
As I do not know that many people and who is who (as on some meets I address people with a hello but get a negative response) I am not sure if they are a look alike and I have spoken to a complete stranger.
If possible can Andrew and Cef make contact so at least I can put a face to a name. I will be at Leeds Wednesday.

I think minimum we need 3 cars for the week but how much more each would it be for a 4th? It would provide greater flexibility.

I could take the dreaded Doblo to Stansted (with brakes, Peri) so could take 4 passengers and perhaps extra kit if neccessary.
I think I'm the only full-time walker (or non-climber) going, so was thinking of hiring a car on my own.To help pay off the enormous cost of so doing, I shall charge Mr Evans extortionate petrol costs for those days he's off playing with me.
As to car companies, tried AMS-TRAVEL? They do free zero excess insurance.

Hi Steve,

Cef is in Brazil at the moment so don't expect a quick reply !

With regards to a car over there - do you mean you & paula are hiring your own car so you can do your own thing if / when not climbing for added flexibility ?

more generally - Andrew seems to be suggesting hiring his own car so he can go walking - what we want to avoid is people not able to go climbing as we've run out of space and people not able to go off as there are no cars (though I have no idea of buses or whats within walking distance or en-route)  I believe most crags are close by so could easily be dropped off and the cars go elsewhere.

bit complex this one ... but at least 4 cars are needed - I think that's clear

It's not Karen, it's Andrew having an identity crisis ;-)

According to Google Maps, it's a 5 hour drive (each way) from where we're staying to Etna.

Andrew won't be at the wall as he's not a climber, but you should remember him - you spent the day walking with him on 24th September 2005 :-)

Nobody knows who Cef is so you're not alone. I'm not convinced he actually exists.

"Karen" is my nom de plume, or should that be Nom de yac? Andrew
And, yes, my social secretary is correct, I did spend an afternoon walking with Steve on a Derbyshire meet yonks ago.
Now back to the thread theme-car hire.Count me out of your climbers' car hire count,Rob.I shall hire the smallest legal car possible. If there is any space in it after loading Mr Evans and a day's supply of his pork pies on it, I will give a lift to anyone.
Andrew
PS Pete needs to know the Italian for Pork Pie. Anyone know?

For Pete E's reference or anyone ordering for him in the local bar pork pie is pasticcio di maiale in crosta in Italian.... now that's a mouthful!  :D

T

PS shouldn't we stop trying to count higher than 4 and book the damn cars??

If Andrew has one and Paula has one then we need sufficient for the remaining 10 climbers. We could get away with 2 bigger cars, so long as everyone climbed in the same place, or we'd end up with 2 odd-numbered groups. We also need to think about what happens if < 5 want a non-climbing day. It might be better to go for 3 small ones?

i propose we book a car each then we can all do what we like.

OTOH .. Steve says Paula is happy to chill and do whatever so i'd say Andrew + 3
if it turn out out to be that bad we can get another one when out there !

well as long as you are happy to do the same as everyone else (unlike the last couple of years) then Andrew + 3 should be OK.

http://www.economycarhire.com also have no insurance excess.
But when comparing prices don't forget that you can get insurance to cover the excess for not very much, eg https://www.carhireexcess.com charge £16 for the week.

What sort of car size are we looking for?

Andrew +3 means that we have a car for each house... that sounds like a fair deal. As long as we don't stupidly small vehicles then we should be fine. Get cars that would fit 3 in the backseat in case one of the cars is used for a castle/gelato/volcano run then we're sorted. Losing Andrew to his 'scooter' means there are 11 of us to ferry about...
