Wainstones Evening
June 25th, 2021 by Peter WalkerWe took advantage of a good forecast and late summer sunsets to make the longer drive up the A19 to the Wainstones on the north side of the moors. We were 8 by the time Jamie arrived.
For some of us it was the first time back on rock for quite some time, so took it steady and got back into the swing of things, with even the lower grades […] Read the rest
Off our Trollers
June 18th, 2021 by rob sLangdale Weekend
June 17th, 2021 by pebblesA group of us headed up to Greater Langdale for a camping weekend of cragging, biking, scrambling and walking. It felt great to be back in the hills after such a long, covid-enforced break, and we had accidentally picked a weekend of great weather. A whole bunch of people headed out on a big hill walk over Bowfell and various other peaks on Saturday, while others variously went […] Read the rest
Quick trip to the Cliff
June 16th, 2021 by rob sfour of us made it to Almscliff last night in the first of hopefully weekly socially distanced evening meets outside. The sun was shining, as was the polish on the routes and it hasn't got any less steep in the last year!
Now we have very successful weekly walk events, the weekend camping the climbers are able to get together in small groups and enjoy the summer… […] Read the rest
Little did we know . . .
November 20th, 2020 by Simon CThe March meet was at a new hut for the club, the Peter Llowarch Memorial Hut near Capel Curig. Due to a combination of injury, prior engagement, and looking at the weather forecast, attendance was the lowest we've had for some time, with only 5 making the journey.
The first difficulty was finding the hut, which involved parking by a farm and walking down a track. We arrived in 3 […] Read the rest
Richard Payne Meet 2020
April 7th, 2020 by pebblesAlmost the last meet til….well, who knows? I'm writing this in the middle of the Covid 19 lock down and suddenly the opportunity to get rained on in Scottish woods feels like something I'd fight werewolves for. So anyway, there we were up in Scotland from February 13th to 15th on the inaugural Richard Payne Meet, renamed to commemorate club member Richard Payne who was tragically killed by an avalanche […] Read the rest
January Blues (skies)
March 1st, 2020 by rob sOur last pre-Brexit meet was to the Climbers Club hut Grange, Borrowdale in North Lakes. A fine hut we have stayed at before and a good turn out for a walking weekend with haggis supper. We were joined by a couple of CC members which made for a feast of fun on Sat night.
Sat was clear and dry but very cold with a chilly wind, climbing would technically have […] Read the rest
Every season except winter
January 11th, 2020 by Simon CThis year we had the biggest New Year meet turn out for years, filling Blackrock Cottage and with people camping in vans and even staying at the ski centre up the road. So it shouldn't have been surprising that we also had some of the worst weather, with a massive thaw stripping pretty much all the remaining snow, and heavy rain and strong winds putting the high summits out of […] Read the rest
Coniston Coppermines
December 18th, 2019 by JayneThis Autumn has been exceptionally wet and there was no let up all weekend for the December Coniston Coppermines meet. It was fully booked with 16 sleeping in the hut and Peri in her van.
There was poor visibility, very wet underfoot, strong winds and clothing was tested to its limits with constant driving rain. But it didn’t stop a large group walking up Coniston Old Man then onto Wetherlam. […] Read the rest
